Inspect using debugger

Are you sure the item exists on the form? An Object variable not set error after you set it would make me suspect the item may not exist.

You can check this with a test before you assign the value of item with another test - If not (doc.HasItem("ShortName")) then ...

Also, are you inspecting the doc object's items prior to setting the item? Are you inspecting the item after you set it? I would do both.
